Albert Paley

Albert Paley has been active as an artist for over 40 years. At his studio in Rochester, New York, he employs fifteen full time people. He is the first metal sculptor to receive the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Institute of Architects, the AIA’s highest award to a non-architect. Paley holds an Endowed Chair at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York and is the recipient of three Honorary Doctorates in Fine Art. Broadly published and an international lecturer, Paley received both his BFA and MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.

Commissioned by both public and private corporations, Paley has completed more than 50 site-specific works. Some notable examples are the Portal Gates for the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, Portal Gates for the New York State Senate Chambers in Albany, a 40-ton sculpture for Adobe Systems in San Jose, CA, major entrance rotunda gates for the San Francisco Civic Center Courthouse, and a sculptural relief for Wellington Place, Toronto, Canada.

Recently completed works include Odyssey, a massive four-sculpture installation for the Iowa West foundation, in Council Bluffs Iowa, Evanesce, a 100 foot tall sculpture installed in Monterey Mexico, a plaza sculpture for the entrance of The Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences in West Virginia, and three plaza sculptures for the National Harbor complex in Fort Washington, Maryland.

His work can be found in the permanent collections of over 30 museums, nationally and internationally, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Toledo Museum of Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum and The British Museum, both in London.

In 2010, Albert Paley in the 21st Century was published, and in 2007 PBS aired an Emmy award winning documentary chronicling Paley’s construction and installation of The Sentinel for the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York.
